The most promising prospects of European basketball are gathering in the Žalgirio arena on January 19-21. The capital of Lithuanian basketball is welcoming the 16th edition of Euroleague Basketball adidas Next Generation Junior Tournament. For the sixth time one of four qualification tournaments will be organized by BC Žalgiris Kaunas.

Eight teams from six countries will strive for the opportunity to seal the ticket to Belgrade, Serbia to compete against the best under-18 teams. The main adidas Next Generation Junior Tournament will be held in parallel with the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague Final Four on May 18-20.

Junior teams from all across the Europe gathered in Kaunas also in 2012 and from 2014 to 2017. Back then Žalgiris Kaunas won all the tournaments without dropping a single game at Žalgirio arena. This time the hosts will compete in in Group A with VEF Riga of Latvia, Khimki Moscow Region of Russia and Stelazzurra Rome of Italy. While Group B will see battles between Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius of Lithuania, Fenerbahce Dogus Istanbul of Turkey, CFBB Paris of France and CSKA Moscow of Russia.

Group games will be played on January 19th and 20th. On Sunday, January 21st, all the teams will find out their places in the tournament and the group winners will face each other in the final.

The tournament, organized by the EuroLeague, has seen many European basketball stars being born. European silver medalists Mantas Kalnietis, Jonas Mačiulis, Donatas Motiejūnas and Jonas Valančiūnas, NBA stars Nikola Mirotic, Dario Saric and Milos Teodosic, Real Madrid wonder boy Luka Doncic, EuroLeague champions Bogdan Bogdanovic and Luigi Datome, Žalgiris’ players Edgaras Ulanovas, Axel Toupane and Gytis Masiulis – all of them were the participants of the previous tournaments.

The first edition of EuroLeague Junior Tournament was held in 2003 in Barcelona and was won by Zalgiris Kaunas who later repeated the triumph in 2007 in Athens. Last year CFBB Paris players became champions in Istanbul.
