Zalgiris juniors finish ANGT Kaunas with a win vs CSKA 1

U18 Zalgiris Kaunas rebounded from its first-ever loss in Euroleague Basketball adidas Next Generation Tournament Kaunas history to grab third place with an 82-65 victory over U18 CSKA Moscow.

Volodymyr Markovetskyy and Martynas Arlauskas both scored 17 points and Erikas Venskus added 11 points and 11 rebounds in the win, which came after Zalgiris lost to U18 Stellazzurra Rome to snap its 22-game winning streak in this competition, spanning back to 2012 and five ANGT Kaunas titles.

CSKA got 25 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists from Aleksandr Ershov in the loss and Filipp Gafurov scored 13 points.

Giedrius Bergaudas picked up two baskets in the early going as Zalgiris went up 8-4. Denis Kovalev and Pavel Zakharov hit three-pointers at the other end to put CSKA ahead 12-14. Venskus followed with 4 points and Zalgiris was leading 20-18 after 10 minutes.

Markovetskyy came up with 5 points as Zalgiris started the second half with a 9-2 run to lead 29-20. And a 9-0 spurt later in the quarter had the home side up 40-25. At halftime the score was 44-33.

CSKA tried to get closer with Gafurov converting a three-point play and hitting a three-pointer but Zalgiris was still up 50-39. And gap was up to 20 points late in the quarter, which ended with the home side up 63-45.

Ershov scored 10 straight points for CSKA in the final period but Zalgiris continually converted on offense and kept the margin in double digits at 70-56 midway through the quarter. CSKA would not get closer the rest of the game.
