Zalgiris Kaunas staged the second-biggest comeback in EuroLeague history, erasing a 27-point deficit to defeat EA7 Emporio Armani Milan 85-82 on the road on Thursday night.
Trailing by 27 points (35-62) with four minutes left in the third quarter, Zalgiris turned the game around, dominating the final 14 minutes with a 50-20 run.
“First of all, I want to understand what happened in the first three quarters,” said coach Andrea Trinchieri, calmly reflecting on the game. “These guys are working hard, and I want to convince them that they can play better.
“This is my first thing, I don’t look at these numbers,” he continued. “I’m very happy for my players, for the club, and for the fans, but I live in solving problems. I want to understand how I can help my team so this doesn’t happen again.”
Was it a miracle?
“It’s not a miracle, it’s just a great comeback,” Trinchieri said firmly.
Has he experienced something similar before?
“No, my [experience] was -25. But I believe it was 5,000 years ago. I don’t even recall it,” he said with a smile. “But I remember it was 25. I don’t know, maybe it was a youth game. Anyway, it’s a big comeback [tonight].”
Zalgiris have won three out of four games and will host Maccabi next week.
