Zalgiris Kaunas has found a replacement for Algirdas Brazys as the club’s Sports Director. Sarunas Sakalauskas, who has coached Lithuanian and German teams in his career, was confirmed at the position for the remainder of the season.

“Zalgiris is a strong team. Their game always attracts a lot of public attention. I’ll be responsible for sporting affairs and will try to fit in to the  team fluidly,” said Sakalaukas.

The new Sports Director added that he’ll look for new solution, which would help to improve the team’s performance on the court. “I already have some ideas, but I need to get some inside info from the club. We’ll look into the future and search for talented players, who could join the team. To sum up, the position of Sporting Director includes helping players and the coaching staff,” explained Sakalauskas.

The former coach has been at the helm of teams such as Sakalai, later Lietuvos Rytas and from 2001 until recently coached Eisbaren Bremerhaven in Germany to lead the club from the second division to the reasonable heights of Bundesliga.

Sakalauskas has spent nine years in Germany, in which he didn’t only bring Eisbaren to the semi-finals of the German league in 2006, but also won the Best Bundesliga Coach award in the same season as well.

The club decided to part ways with the Lithuanian coach in the spring of 2009 and later on returned to Lithuania.

Sakalauskas has been an assistant coach of the Lithuanian youth National Team and won the European Championship gold in 1996.
