Arvydas Sabonis named honorary president of Zalgiris Kaunas 1

Zalgiris Kaunas welcomes the 2022-2023 basketball season with the legendary Lithuanian basketball player Arvydas Sabonis at the forefront – the long-time Zalgiris player has become the Honorary President of Zalgiris.

This spring, arguably the greatest Lithuanian basketball player of all time, sold his shares in Zalgiris to the current Zalgiris CEO, Paulius Motiejunas, but did not retire from the club.

Sabonis continues to be actively involved in the overall management of the organization and will now pay even more attention to the club’s affairs.

“New and young people have joined the Zalgiris organization and they need to feel more rooted. It was a good decision that will strengthen the Zalgiris team in the future. And my duties will be the same as always – to help somewhere, to go somewhere, to represent somewhere,” Sabonis told the #ZalgirisOnAir podcast.

The former president of the Lithuanian Basketball Federation (LKF) will also help Paulius Jankunas, who has retired as a player, to take his first steps in sports management.

“I wouldn’t say that I will be a mentor, but if he wants, I will talk to him and if he sees that there is something valuable, he will take it. Everybody has their own. We will look at the youth together, we will look at other things – nothing new,” said the Lithuanian basketball legend.
