Kazys Maksvytis discusses the face-off against AS Monaco 1

Zalgiris Kaunas head coach Kazys Maksvytis addressed the defense against AS Monaco star guard, Mike James, ahead of Thursday’s EuroLeague game at Salle Gaston Medecin.

“It is impossible to stop him completely. He will collect his points. Of course, it is important to limit him somewhat and cut him off from his teammates, but to shut him down completely is probably impossible,” Maksvytis said of James.

The Lithuanian specialist then referred to ALBA Berlin’s defense, as coach Israel Gonzalez tried to limit James by using a box-and-one strategy for the entire time the Monaco star was gracing the court. The latter defensive tactic provoked James’ frustration following the match vs. ALBA.

“We have plan A, we have plan B, we will try to use them,” Maksvytis responded when asked if he is going to use something similar to box-and-one defense.

“And in that game [against ALBA], James made only five shooting attempts, but his team won. It is important to slow down not only him but his teammates as well.”

Mike James is one of those players who can sink his opponents when catching a good rhythm. Does Maksvytis see the need of teasing such a player?

“Trash-talking before or during the match can sometimes be really dangerous. There are all kinds of philosophies, as you mentioned ALBA’s example. Some teams let him score but cut him off from his teammates. We also have a plan ready, and we hope it will work,” Zalgiris’ coach concluded.

The Monaco-Zalgiris game is tomorrow at 21:00 CET.
