Zalgiris started the new Euroleague season just the way they wanted. The Lithuanian club defeated their Group A rivals Partizan Belgrade 73:62 (19:17, 24:12, 19:16, 11:17) at home in Kaunas on Thursday evening.

The start of the game promised nothing else, but a see-saw battle as neither team managed to create a reasonable gap. However, Zalgiris went on a 15:3 run in the beginning of the second period behind several three-pointers from Arturas Milaknis and Martynas Pocius to move ahead 34:20.

Partizan had closed the gap to ten points (33:43) when Milaknis scored five straight points and Paulius Jankunas added two of his own for the home team to gain a 17-point lead at 51:34.

Zalgiris kept a safe distance and didn’t allow Partizan to create a close game out of this despite allowing the Serbians to shrink down the lead a little bit.

Martynas Pocius led the hosts with 17 points, Arturas Milaknis proved that he’s going to have his break-out year this season by scoring 12 points as DeJuan Collins collected 9 points, but committed 7 turnovers.

Dusan Kecman had a team-high 13 points as well as adding 6 rebounds to his stat line, Jaka Klobucar played a fine role off the bench scoring 9 points in very limited action while Petar Bozic collected 7 points.
