The Lithuanian basketball community has been shaken by a painful loss. The legendary Zalgiris Kaunas and Lithuania men’s national team coach Vladas Garastas has passed away at the age of 94.

Born in Birzai, Garastas was an active athlete from an early age, playing basketball and football, while also competing in athletics. He represented Birzai in Lithuanian school sports competitions and at one point even set a national record by running 1000 meters in 2 minutes and 47 seconds. After finishing school, he focused on basketball, playing as a point guard for Zalgiris while studying at the Lithuanian Institute of Physical Education (now the Lithuanian Sports University).

At the age of 25, Garastas decided not to pursue a playing career at the highest level and instead turned to coaching, returning to his hometown of Birzai to work with young players.

The year 1979 became a turning point in both Garastas’ coaching career and Lithuanian basketball history, as he was offered the position of head coach of Zalgiris Kaunas. At the time, the club was struggling, having finished second from last in the Soviet Championship, and even five other coaches had declined the role.

Upon taking charge, Garastas focused on improving players’ commitment to training, strengthening their mentality, and building team chemistry. Within a year, the results were evident – Zalgiris rose to second place in the Soviet Championship. The team would later win multiple USSR championship titles and runner-up finishes. In 1986, after winning gold medals, the team reached the finals of European competitions against the continent’s strongest clubs. That same year, in September, Zalgiris won the Intercontinental William Jones Cup in Argentina and were crowned world club champions.

After Lithuania regained independence, Garastas, encouraged by the country’s top players, took over the Lithuanian men’s national team. Under his leadership, Lithuania won Olympic bronze medals in Barcelona (1992) and Atlanta (1996). In 1995, his team reached the European Championship final, narrowly losing to Yugoslavia after a dramatic battle.

Throughout his coaching career, Garastas also worked in Czechoslovakia and coached Lithuanian clubs such as Atletas Kaunas and Alita Alytus. From 2003 to 2011, he served as President of the Lithuanian Basketball Federation.

Among his most notable players were Arvydas Sabonis, Rimas Kurtinaitis, Valdemaras Chomicius, Sergejus Jovaisa, and others.

On April 22, 2017, in recognition of his contributions to the club, Garastas’ symbolic jersey was raised to the rafters of Zalgirio Arena.
