From April 6–8, the Zalgiris Kaunas organization hosted the fifth edition of the Zalgiris Coaching Clinic, a coaches’ development program. During the clinic, participants had the opportunity to gain experience from coaches within the Zalgiris youth system, as well as to observe the behind-the-scenes work on a game day of the first team and attend the EuroLeague match against Dubai Basketball.
“Coming here was my dream – I had wanted to do this for a very long time. It was amazing to see the training facilities and, most importantly, to meet the people. I think this city breathes basketball, and it all starts from a very young age. The game against Dubai Basketball left a huge impression on me, and I’m very happy that I spent three days here,” said coach Alex Kamarashki, who arrived at the clinic from Bulgaria.
Before the clinic, Zalgiris Coaching Clinic organizer Andrius Gopenas emphasized that the main idea of the program was to help coaches understand how to apply theoretical knowledge in practice – a point echoed by participant Simona Dobrovolskyte, who currently coaches in Sweden.
“I coach in Sweden, and I think my team last season was very similar to this year’s Zalgiris youth team. It was extremely informative to meet the coaches and receive their advice on game planning and the tactics they use. For me as a coach, this was very valuable. On the final day of the clinic, it was also great to hear about the importance of psychology, because mental preparation is very important within the Zalgiris organization as well,” said Dobrovolskyte.
Finally, participants also shared their thoughts about getting to know different coaching philosophies.
“Without a doubt, all coaches have different tactics, but when such clinics and meetings take place, everything revolves around basketball, the players, and the entire culture – which is very important in Lithuania. That’s why I believe it’s essential to get to know coaches from other countries, share knowledge, and find inspiration,” highlighted the coach from Sweden.
